The Data Center Chief Engineer is a Subject Matter Expert on the mechanical, electrical, fire/life safety and ancillary systems within the data centre. They are responsible for ensuring all technical drawings and information accurately reflect the installed infrastructure and for certifying the safe and non-service affecting operation of the site. In addition to being the technical expert the role involves training the site engineers on the engineering systems to achieve the required competency level for their role. Other responsibilities include planned preventative maintenance, vendor management and client reports.

Data center equipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, standby diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, DRUPs, fire and building automation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own, develop and implement all technical processes and procedures to ensure safe and non-service affecting operation of the site
  • Lead root cause investigation of system failures and produce the associated technical reports
  • Principle representative for specialist vendor engagements i.e. review and approve technical failure reports, risk assessments and method statements
  • Develop and deliver a team training programme for the engineering systems
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems
  • Complete planned and ad-hoc preventive maintenance work assignments requiring the skill and direction of several engineering, mechanical, and maintenance trades
  • Conduct periodic inspections of building engineering systems ensuring their correct operational status and operating within the design capacity, i.e., HVAC, electrical distribution
  • Rapid response, investigation, and management of indoor emergency situations and air quality complaints
  • Have a complete working knowledge on creating, closing and tracking "work requests" (WR). Initiate or respond to work orders, follow-up and verify completion of work
  • Monitor performance/note deficiencies of service contractors and recommend changes as necessary
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management

Skills & Experience

  • Significant & proven experience (likely 10-15 years +) in the operation, installation and maintenance of data center critical equipment, building systems with in-depth technical understanding and knowledge of all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and control systems
  • A Mechanical or Electrical Engineer Degree, or a proven progressive engineering career in Data Center power and cooling technologies
  • Expert knowledge of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, Chillers, Air handling units, RCU, BMS, Fire detection and extinguish systems Room
  • Hold current certificates for low and high voltage switching
  • Proven observation skills and problem-solving ability
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English is required
