The Controls Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves as the primary technical authority for Building Management Systems (BMS) and control systems supporting mission-critical data centers. Reporting to the Data Center Manager, this role ensures that monitoring, automation, and control systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The SME provides deep technical knowledge of control logic, programming, and integration across mechanical and electrical systems. This position plays a key role in system optimization, incident response, and training to ensure alignment between Salute, client teams, and site operations.

Responsibilities
Technical Expertise & Program Leadership
- Serve as the on-site subject matter expert for BMS, SCADA, and control systems supporting critical facility operations.
- Take accountability for all BMS and controls changes, upgrades, and enhancements, ensuring proper documentation and version control.
- Diagnose and resolve complex control system malfunctions across electrical, mechanical, and monitoring subsystems.
- Troubleshoot, test, and repair controls hardware, including controllers, relays, sensors, actuators, and I/O modules, in collaboration with mechanical and electrical device systems.
- Analyze operating data to identify trends, optimize energy efficiency, and maintain system stability.
- Oversee configuration management for control systems, ensuring integrity through best practices and change management protocols.
- Provide QA/QC oversight of new system installations, retrofits, and commissioning efforts.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to BMS logic, sequence of operations, and alarm configurations.
- Collaborate with project engineering teams to support control system integration with mechanical, electrical, and IT networks.
Compliance, Quality, & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure adherence to safety, security, and operational standards governing control systems and industrial automation.
- Develop, review, and update SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs for control systems operation and maintenance.
- Conduct audits and inspections of BMS configurations and vendor work to ensure compliance with Salute and client standards.
- Support incident investigations and root cause analysis related to control failures or automation issues.
- Ensure BMS and control configurations are aligned with cybersecurity, access, and reliability standards.
- Partner with operations leadership to drive continuous improvement through data analysis, automation refinement, and preventive maintenance planning.
- Monitor and analyze performance data, identifying variances or anomalies in KPIs, energy usage, and control trends.
- Report KPI deviations and performance fluctuations to internal stakeholders in a timely manner, ensuring visibility and corrective action per client SLA requirements.
- Participate in technology reviews to evaluate emerging BMS, PLC, and energy management solutions.
Training, Collaboration, & Stakeholder Support
- Deliver technical training for Salute and client staff on BMS operation, controls logic, and troubleshooting methods.
- Develop and maintain documentation for control systems, sequences of operations, and configuration guides.
- Collaborate with client representatives, vendors, and engineering teams to align operational procedures and reporting requirements.
- Participate in governance and performance review meetings to provide insight on BMS performance, trends, and reliability metrics.
- Mentor engineers and technicians to improve understanding of integrated controls and data center automation systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field required; equivalent military or trade experience may be considered.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and CMMS platforms.
- 5–7+ years of experience working with BMS, SCADA, PLC, or DDC systems in a mission-critical environment, with heavy emphasis on building controls and monitoring or relevant military operations preferred.
- Proven experience with controls integration across mechanical and electrical systems.
- Strong understanding of HVAC, electrical, and fire/life safety systems within critical environments.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting P&IDs, wiring diagrams, CAD drawings, and network schematics.
- Demonstrated skill in controls programming, troubleshooting, and system commissioning.
- Working knowledge of IT networking, cybersecurity practices, and industrial protocols (Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, etc.).
- Experience managing change control, configuration management, and QA/QC processes for automation systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across teams and vendors.
- Familiarity with software programming languages or scripting for control systems is preferred.
- Project management or engineering leadership experience is a plus.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and safely access mechanical and electrical spaces during inspections or maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise surpassing the role of a field technician, encompassing areas such as project management, project engineering, and operations management.

Compensation & Benefits Disclosure
The base salary range for this role is $133,200.00 annually. This range reflects a good‑faith estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay upon hire, based on factors such as skills, experience, education, and market/location. Our comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), gym discount, mental health, Discounted Group Life & AD&D, Discounted Group Short & Long-term Disability, 401(k) retirement matching, PTO/paid holidays, and parental leave. Final compensation will be determined by job‑related factors consistent with applicable law.
