We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer Support to join our Engineering team in Oberlin, OH. The Automation Engineer Support is a critical role within the Engineering department responsible for enabling sales success, driving continuous improvement initiatives, executing corrective engineering actions, and delivering sustainable/adaptive engineering solutions. This position serves as the technical bridge between sales, service, and engineering teams, ensuring customer needs are met through practical, supportable automation solutions.

Responsibilities:

Sales Support

  • Technical Sales Support: Provide expert technical guidance to the sales team during customer engagements, helping identify and define automation solutions that align with customer applications and sales strategy.
  • Sales Enablement & Training: Develop and deliver training programs and materials to equip sales representatives with the technical knowledge necessary to position automation systems effectively. Provide ongoing technical coaching to support confident and accurate selling.
  • Product Demonstration Support: Assist in preparing for and executing technical demonstrations of automation equipment at trade shows, customer sites, or internal demo facilities. Ensure equipment is configured and presented to highlight key selling features.
  • Sales Documentation & Tools: Contribute to the creation and maintenance of sales-focused documentation, including product specifications, capability sheets, technical comparisons, and application guides.

Continuous Improvement

  • Field Feedback Integration: Collect, analyze, and communicate field performance data and customer feedback to identify opportunities for product and process improvements.
  • Process Optimization: Collaborate with engineering and production teams to implement improvements to manufacturing processes, testing procedures, and quality control measures.
  • Documentation Updates: Maintain and improve technical documentation, assembly procedures, and service manuals based on lessons learned from field deployments.

Corrective Engineering

  • Issue Resolution: Investigate and resolve technical issues reported from the field, developing corrective actions and engineering change orders as needed.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Conduct thorough root cause analysis on field failures and implement permanent solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Service Team Collaboration: Coordinate with the service team to ensure that solutions can be effectively supported and help translate field issues into actionable engineering solutions.

Sustainable & Adaptive Engineering

  • System Customization: Modify and adapt existing automation systems to meet unique customer needs identified during the sales process. Ensure feasibility and alignment with existing product offerings.
  • System Validation: Verify system performance and compatibility using customer-supplied materials when needed to support sales commitments and ensure expectations are met.
  • Pre-Production Oversight: Follow the production and assembly of custom automation systems to ensure that system design intent is upheld through to delivery.
  • Service Training Programs: Develop and lead structured training programs for service technicians, focusing on installation procedures, system operation, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, skills, and abilities required):

  • Associate degree or higher in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field. Equivalent technical certifications or industry experience will be considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in automation engineering, technical sales support, or applications engineering
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 programming standards and CODESYS development environment preferred
  • Background in greenhouse, agriculture, or controlled environment systems is a plus
  • Valid driver's license (required for work-related travel)
  • Valid passport and ability to travel across the Canada–U.S. border
  • Occasional travel to customer sites, trade shows, or other company locations (estimated 10-20%)
  • Strong understanding of industrial automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and motor controls
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical information for diverse audiences
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with systematic approach to issue resolution
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, track deliverables, and coordinate with cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency in reading and creating electrical schematics and technical drawings
  • Experience with customer-facing technical support and consultation
  • Collaborative mindset with ability to work effectively across sales, service, and engineering functions
