IoT Applications Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled IoT Applications Engineer to join our Engineering team in Oberlin, OH. The IoT Applications Engineer owns the end-to-end integration of IoT capabilities into industrial automation equipment and will work alongside the IoT Full-Stack Developer to connect machines, collect and model telemetry, enable remote monitoring/control, and deliver data to cloud platforms and enterprise systems. The IoT Applications Engineer will lead solution design at the edge, commission deployments on the factory floor, ensure secure and reliable operation, and translate field needs into scalable product features.

Responsibilities:
Solution Design & Integration
- Define edge architecture (sensors, gateways, network topology) and select components for connectivity and data acquisition
- Integrate with PLC/HMI/SCADA systems
- Implement and troubleshoot industrial protocols (OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET)
- Configure and optimize IoT messaging (MQTT/CA), QoS, topics, and payload schemas
Collaboration with IoT Full-Stack Developer
- Co-design data contracts, APIs, and device-twin models; align on topics, naming, and versioning
- Implement secure device provisioning, identity, and OTA update workflows; support backend integrations (REST/gRPC, webhooks)
- Provide edge and field feedback to drive backlog priorities and product improvements
Deployment, Commissioning & Support
- Install and configure gateways, sensors, and networking (Ethernet/Wi-Fi, VPNs, firewalls, VLANs)
- Execute FAT/SAT, site readiness checks, and acceptance testing; create and maintain SOPs and runbooks
- Onboard new customers to IoT platform, providing training on system operation, monitoring dashboards, and alert management
- Guide customers through initial production ramp-up, ensuring successful adoption and value realization
- Triage connectivity and data-quality issues; perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions
Reliability, Security & Compliance
- Apply secure-by-design practices (TLS, certificates, PKI, credential rotation, least-privilege access); support IEC 62443-aligned controls
- Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for device health and data pipelines, drive uptime and data completeness
Data & Analytics Enablement
- Model time-series data; ensure accurate tagging and metadata; enable dashboards and alerts for operations and service teams
- Support predictive maintenance/condition-monitoring use cases (e.g., vibration, current, temperature)
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
- Create and maintain technical architecture and design documentation for IoT solutions
- Develop SOPs, runbooks, and troubleshooting guides for edge deployments and integrations
- Document integration specifications, data contracts, and API schemas for cross-team collaboration
- Write deployment procedures, configuration standards, and commission checklists
- Produce field service documentation for installation, setup, and diagnostics
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, skills, and abilities required and preferred)
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field
- 3+ years implementing industrial IoT solutions or integrating automation equipment with cloud/enterprise systems
Required
- Industrial automation experience with PLCs, HMIs, drives, and sensors (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens/Codesys)
- Protocols: OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, REST; Pub/Sub patterns
- Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VLANs, VPNs; firewall rules; Linux at the edge
- Programming: Python and/or Node-RED; Bash/PowerShell
- Tooling: Git, CI/CD, Docker/containers, monitoring/observability tools
- Strong problem-solving, customer service mindset, and safety awareness
- Valid driver’s license (required for work-related travel).
• Valid passport and ability to travel across the Canada–U.S. border
Preferred
- Experience with device identity at scale, zero-touch provisioning, and fleet management
- Knowledge of digital twins and asset models
- Exposure to cybersecurity frameworks for OT environments and risk assessments
- Experience with predictive maintenance algorithms or edge analytics
- Familiarity with C/C++ or Node.js
